This was the world's first mass-produced direct injection gasoline engine. It used unique elemental technologies including a vertical intake port, curved top face piston, high pressure injection pump, and high pressure swirl injector. It realized both low fuel consumption and high output by automatically switching between two combustion modes (low fuel consumption mode and high output mode) in accordance with the driving situation as shown below. Compared with Mitsubishi's vehicles mounted with conventional engines, it improved output in all ranges by approx. 10% and fuel consumption by approx. 35%. Combustion mode Low fuel consumption mode: A compact spherical fuel spray was injected at the end of the compression stroke. Stratified mixture enabled stable super lean burn. High output mode: Fuel was injected conically in the intake stroke. Homogeneous mixture enabled high response and high power. |
