Most of its effort went into re-entering the automobile market. In 1946, Hino put its first new vehicle on the market, a trailer truck modeled after the large vehicles that the Allied Occupation forces had brought into Japan. It used the air-cooled diesel engine and chassis of an armored half-track vehicle that Hino had manufactured during the war. This was followed in 1947 by a trailer truck and trailer bus that both used a Type 98 6-ton tractor unit with a water-cooled diesel engine. The trailer bus helped to ensure the capacity of the public transportation system at a time when cars were in short supply, and its semi-trailer configuration gave it a relatively small turning radius for its size, allowing it to operate on narrow roads.
