| As vehicles continued to increase in size and displacement, the Charade was an attempt to reconsider the car from the standpoint of its essential functions. As a consequence, the Charade was designed to be smaller, more fuel and resource-efficient, and comfortable. In particular, the 3-cylinder, 1000 cc engine featured many new technologies, including a balancer and pots that generated disturbance in the combustion chambers. The Charade attracted attention because of the quietness of the engine, which was mainly due to the balancer mechanism that reduced the characteristic vibration inherent in 3-cylinder engines. This mechanism functioned by setting the crankshaft balance weight to a predetermined value and intentionally generating a couple force on the crankshaft. This couple force was then cancelled out by a dedicated balance shaft.
In addition, the Charade had a frontal projected area of only approximately 5 square meters, which earned it a nickname in Japan translatable as "the 5-square meter car". That, and its excellent maneuverability due to its small turning circle made the Charade a firm favorite with a large number of customers. |
