240 Landmarks Top ＞ Passenger Cars, Part 3 ＞ Datsun Bluebird P510 　Datsun Bluebird P510 In 1967, the new model Bluebird (P510) was released under the catchphrase "a new car for a new era". The P510 was characterized by its long nose/short deck proportions, and its styling that used so-called "supersonic" lines that gave it a wedge-shaped sharp silhouette that evoked the form of a high-speed jet aircraft. It was also equipped with the following features: 1) Fresh styling without triangular windows 2) Newly designed OHC 72 hp engine 3) New strut type front independent suspension 4) New semi trailing type rear independent suspension 5) Curved door glass 6) New ventilation system 7) Safety equipment A total of 14 variations were released at the same time: 8 basic vehicle types (2- and 4-door, deluxe, standard, 1600SSS, wagon, as well as standard and deluxe van versions) in addition to 2 taxi variations and 4 models equipped with torque converters. This was the first time in Japan that 14 versions of a car in this class had been offered from its launch. Subsequently, the number of variations continued to increase to accommodate the latest fashion for high-speed, long-distance drives as the road network spread throughout Japan, as well as to respond to diversification in customer requirements. As the Bluebird came to be offered in a wide range of variations, it took on a symbolic presence as the archetypal family car in Japan's post-war motorization. Its status as a historic car demarcated a clear period in Japan's automotive history. The car shown in this picture was the overall champion in the 18th East Africa Safari Rally in 1970. It won a clean sweep, taking the overall, class and team titles. The fame of the P510 also spread thanks to its role in the film made about the 17th Safari Rally, 5000 Kilometers to Glory, starring Ishihara Yujiro.
