The 2000GT was a fully-fledged gran turismo sports car with a comfortable ride suited for either low-speed driving on city streets or for high-speed driving on the highway.
It had finely proportioned long nose styling and high performance that surpassed international standards as a result of its 6-cylinder, twin-camshaft 2000 cc engine, backbone frame structure, double wishbone suspension and disc brakes at all 4 corners, and its Mg alloy wheels.
Not developed for mass-production, the 2000GT was provided with new mechanisms aimed solely at improving driving performance. It was intended to be a raceable car with the addition of only a few replacement parts. The 2000GT demonstrated the standard of Japanese technology to the world by breaking various world and Japanese records during ultra-high speed endurance trials.
The 2000GT was also warmly received outside of Japan, and was specially featured in the 20th anniversary issue of the American enthusiast magazine, Road and Track.
Style:
The 2000GT exhibited a low-slung, flowing and beautiful style, formed entirely from aerodynamic curves. The pop-up headlights were the first to be employed on a Japanese car.
High-speed endurance:
The high-speed endurance of the 2000GT was thanks to Toyota's first DOHC in-line 6-cylinder 1988 cc engine, which had an output of 150 ps, and was mated to a fully synchromeshed 5-speed transmission.
High-speed safety:
The 2000GT featured an independent suspension setup at all 4 wheels, limited slip differential and Japan's first all-round vacuum-boosted disc brakes.
Interior:
The interior of the 2000GT was designed based on ergonomic principles to optimize operability. Its features included a non-glare instrument panel, high-class mahogany expandable steering wheel, and leather-upholstered reclining bucket seats. |
