The 800 had a horizontally opposed 2-cylinder (U-design) air-cooled 790 cc engine with an output of 45 ps, and a body that featured various weight reduction measures such as parts that used aluminum and acrylic.
The concept behind the 800 was to put a 100 mp/h sports car within reach of the general public. The combination of the engine and a dynamically styled body that emphasized aerodynamics propelled it to a top speed of 155 km/h. That, and its good fuel economy, low price and usability turned the 800 into the quintessential lightweight sports car.
Style: The vehicle exhibited a full range of ingenuity to lower wind resistance, such as reducing the frontal projected area and Japan's first use of curved glass in the side windows.
High-speed performance:
The reduced vehicle weight thanks to use of light aluminum alloys and lowered wind resistance gave the 800 a better top speed (155 km/h) and acceleration (18.4 seconds for the quarter-mile) than sports cars in the class above.
High-speed stability:
High-speed stability was increased by making improvements to the components of the Publica used in the front and rear suspension.
Economy: The reduced weight and lowered wind resistance gave the 800 an impressive fuel economy of 31 km/l. |
