After the ending of the technological tie-up with Austin in 1960, Nissan developed a new mid-size car and called it the (Model 30) Cedric. The name was taken from the hero of the English-born writer Burnett's famous book Little Lord Fauntleroy, who was well known throughout the world as a model of strength, justice and beauty. The aim was to inspire the same love in the car as that felt for Fauntleroy. The main characteristics of the Cedric were: 1) 4 vertically stacked easily distinguishable tail lamps 2) the largest interior space in the mid-size passenger vehicle class and well-laid out accessories 3) safety mechanisms such as a cone-shaped steering wheel and rubber padding on the instrument panel 4) servo brakes on both the front and rear wheels 5) wraparound windshield. Like the Bluebird, the rear seats were widened by 40 mm after its release and the passenger capacity increased from 4 to 5, enabling small taxis to carry more people for the same price. In addition, the Nissan Cedric Custom (G30) was also released in 1960 in response to increasing demand from government agencies, as well as commercial and hire companies for larger and more luxurious vehicles. Its main characteristics were: 1) a newly designed 1883 cc, 88 ps engine 2) a 100 mm increase in total length, making it the largest car produced in Japan 3) equipment such as rear seat pillows, dedicated rear heater, and a passenger side vanity mirror. It was eventually given a minor upgrade in 1962 and provided with 4 horizontally mounted headlamps. |
