| As a result of another technological tie-up, the Austin A40 Somerset saloon was assembled in 1953 under the instruction of two British engineers, Bailey and Bayless. The proportion of domestically produced parts increased until 1956, at which point all production had been brought inside Japan. This also coincided with the model change to the A50 in Britain. The main characteristics of the Austin A50 Cambridge saloon were its contemporary styling, special unitary body construction, powerful engine (1500 cc, 50 hp), smooth hydraulic clutch, hypoid bevel gears (which gave it a stable driving performance and comfortable ride), and roomy interior. The A50 was 6 cm longer but 8 cm lower and 5 cm narrower than the A40. Even so, it had an interior that was wider by 4 cm, which enabled the seats to be widened and the distance between the front and rear seats to be increased. The A50 also featured completely new body styling. |
